These substitutes may be recommended by your health professional. Soy beans are used to make soy milk. Soy milk has a slightly sweet taste. Because soy milk is a great source of fat, protein and fiber, it is one of the best milk substitutes. It may also be enhanced with added vitamin D and additional calcium. Another advantage is that soy milk is free of saturated fats and cholesterol. Soy milk remains stable at higher temperatures so it can be used in cooking or baking. Other ways of using soy milk include using it as a beverage, or in your coffee, or in a bowl of cereal.
Almond Milk Substitute
A great alternative to cow’s milk is to substitute with almond milk. It is sweet, creamy and high in essential nutrients such as vitamin E. It is not a good source of protein but may be a good source of calcium and vitamin D due to the enrichment of the product. Furthermore, it is a great alternative to use in shakes, desserts, and other areas of cooking due to its natural sweetness.
Another way to avoid regular milk is to use rice milk. Rice milk is also slightly sweet, but has a thinner consistency than either almond or soy milk. Generally, rice milk is made from brown rice. It may be further enhanced with calcium and with vitamin D, but is also not a good source of protein, just the same as almond milk is not a good protein source. Rice milk can be used in cooking as well but usually requires something like eggs or flour as a binding or stabilizing agent in the baking.
Remember that lactose-free products are not always those that are labeled “non-dairy”. Many times, “non-dairy” just means that vegetable fat has been used to replace the milk fat in these products. Several of these products, such as whey, even so will still contain ingredients that contain lactose. So it is very important to get into the habit of checking what is on the label of ingredients before you purchase or use the product.
